 A pair of English cast iron andirons dated 1669 and depicting Native Americans, with initials "PT." The excellent book Iron and Brass Implements of the English House shows several different examples of heavy cast andirons with various 17th century dates, and mentions the popularity of human forms in this period.  These are puddle cast with wrought iron spit hooks attached. Puddle casting is an ancient method where a carved wooden model is pressed into sand on the foundry floor, then removed and molten iron is poured into the resulting void. Approximate weight 55 pounds each.
